The best meals to cook around a campfire
How many of us have ever cooked our dinner on a campfire?
Glamping should be all about trying new things. We also believe that new experiences needn’t be big, and you’ll be pleased to hear that campfire cooking is actually quite simple, as well as being super delicious.
At Secret Wood, we love to provide our guests with unique experiences – whether that be taking you away from everyday life with a TV and WiFi-free holiday, hosting wild foraging days, providing crafting workshops or simply taking you back to enjoying the simplicities in life!
With a log-burning stove and outdoor kitchen, cooking outdoors under the shelter of our private woodland here at Secret Wood is not to be underestimated. Plus, with our family farm Unthank Hall Traditional Meats just next door, we always have extra fresh, local produce.
So, without any further ado, here’s a guide on our favourite campfire meals to cook:
For breakfast
1. A classic fry up
Frying eggs, bacon and sausages, along with cooking beans and grilling toast on a campfire or outdoor stove is a super tasty and fulfilling breakfast to make when you’re glamping.
All you need is a frying pan and saucepan, and with fresh produce from Unthank Farm, cooking up a fry up breakfast at Secret Wood Glamping is all the more delicious!
2. French toast
French toast requires just three things: eggs, bread and a frying pan – all perfectly suitable when cooking outdoors. Extra toppings could also include fresh fruit, bacon, syrup and cinnamon – the choice is yours!
3. Smoky bean brekkie
A slightly different campfire breakfast, but a firm favourite of ours, has to be a smoky bean brekkie. As an all-in-one dish, this recipe mixes together beans, chipolatas, tomatoes and BBQ sauce to make an amazingly flavoursome and healthy breakfast to cook above a campfire or stove.
This dish also pairs well with a fried egg on top, as well as toast.
For lunch and dinner
1. Stews, curries and chillis
When you go camping or glamping, one-pot dishes will become your new best friend.
Stews, curries and chillis are all perfect dishes to cook around the campfire, mainly thanks to their ease in creating hearty, nutritious meals with little mess!
2. Baked potatoes
Baked potatoes are an ideal way of getting in your carbs when camping. Simply just wrap your potatoes in foil and place within the coals of your fire and leave for an hour or so! Paired perfectly with beans, cheese or fried meat.
3. BBQ meat, kebabs and burgers
We can’t do a post about campfire meals without mentioning the classic barbeque! A staple of British summertime, frying up your meat and veg on a barbecue is hard to beat when you’re out camping.
For dessert
1. Smores
Toasted smores and roasted marshmallows just have to be done when you’re thinking about a sweet treat for camping! These are simple to pack, store and make around a campfire.
2. Oreo cookie skillet
If you’re feeling a little more adventurous than marshmallows, preparing a skillet-based dessert on the camping stove is for you.
A favourite one of ours is the Oreo cookie skillet recipe, putting together a packet of Oreos, marshmallows and cookie dough in a skillet, leaving for 10 minutes and voila!
3. Berry peach cobbler skillet
A *slightly* more healthy alternative to the Oreo recipe, this berry-peach cobber recipe also uses a skillet and takes just 20 minutes cooking over the campfire.
Remember, you can also prepare dishes beforehand and simply reheat them on the fire!
