Our favourite waterfall hikes in the Peak District
Outdoor adventure is at the very core of everything here at Secret Wood Glamping. Based in Holmesfield, North Derbyshire, our family have lived here in the beautiful Peak District for hundreds of years.
We love the lifestyle of working in the great outdoors, which is why we set up Secret Wood as a private, luxury accommodation for people across the world to come and enjoy what we are so lucky to have on our doorstep everyday.
As we near the Spring season, we thought it was about time to put together a few of our favourite waterfall hikes here in the Peak District, home to many stunning waterfalls and hiking trails, ideal to get to from the North Derbyshire area.
Waterfall Swallet, Foolow, EyamÂ
Just a 20 minute drive away from the Secret Wood site here in Holmesfield village, Waterfall Swallet is a beautiful hidden treasure in Foolow, near the historic village of Eyam. Situated within a wooded area, it’s also an ideal place to visit on a rainy day, or where the previous week has been wet.
This waterfall is also quite easy to get to, just 10 minutes from the nearby car park. You can read a great guide on how to get to Waterfall Swallet here.
Alternatively, you could find Waterfall Swallet along a longer walk from the nearby village Eyam, taking about 2hrs and 30 mins. Starting at the Bulls Head pub in Foolow, and ending in Eyam, home to several cafes and pubs, you can also ensure to be well fed on this hike!
Find the guide for this walk here.
Lathkill Dale, Over Haddon
Lathkill Dale, located in Over Haddon near Bakewell town, is just 30 minutes from Holmesfield. The dale is a popular spot in the Peak District both for tourists and locals, as a stunning limestone valley with a river and waterfall, steeped in mining history.
The hike to Lathkill Dale’s waterfall can start either at Monyash, where there’s a pub, too, or at Over Haddon, and should take about 2 hours on pretty flat terrain. A more detailed guide for this walk can be found here.
The waterfall spot itself is an ideal place to stop for a picnic, especially on a summer’s day. Whilst swimming isn’t permitted, the fresh water is great for paddling!
Kinder Downfall, High Peak
The highest waterfall in the entire Peak District, Kinder Downfall is a little further away from Holmesfield, a 53 minutes drive, but is well worth the journey!
You can get to the beautiful waterfall, famous for its stunning views, from the neighbouring village of Edale. There are lots of footpaths leading from Edale up towards Kinder Downfall, which is also near to the 2000ft peak of Kinder Scout, Mermaid’s Pool and Kinder Reservoir.
With so much to explore, this waterfall hike is a little more challenging, but absolutely doable even for beginners, making for the perfect day out for walking, climbing, picnicking and exploring!
There are plenty of different routes you can take, but this guide is a good one for exploring it all in a circular route.
